The Faribault Hockey Assocation determines team make-up on a season by season basis, in compliance with Minnesota Hockey. There are two different metrics for determining teams and team make-up. The first is based on the ages of the players in the FHA. Player age is used to determine category of skater. Based on Minnesota Hockey Rules, players, based on their age level at July 1st of each year, are classified as:
1. Mini-Mites ~ Under 6 years old
2. Mites/Girls 8U ~ 7 to 8 years old
3. Squirt/Girls 10U ~ 9 to 10 years old
4. PeeWee/Girls 12U ~ 11 to 12 years old
5. Bantam/Girls 14U ~ 13 to 14 years old
The Faribault Hockey Association furthers this classification with the sole purpose to place each player on a team commensurate with his or her skills. To do this, each player level is further subdivided, generally into a "A", "B", or "C" classification. Skaters are placed into these classifications based on tryout procedures, with the most experienced skaters generally placed on an "A" level, while the least experienced skaters gravitate towards the "C" level.
If there are not enough skaters to subdivide a division, all skaters will be placed on a team based on the overall team ability. Lower levels, such as Mites and MIni-Mites, are split according to numbers in a spread that trys to make each team have equal abilty with the other teams at that level.
